Focus Areas
Our work is organised around four connected focus areas.
1. Policy mapping (MAP)
We track AI strategies, laws, regulations and institutions across African countries using a consistent, transparent methodology, so policymakers, researchers and the public can compare approaches and spot gaps.
Outputs: Country profiles, comparison tools and an annual State of AI Policy in Africa report.
2. AI and law
We research how data protection, accountability, liability and rights apply to AI within African legal systems, and how regulation can be designed to fit local realities.
Outputs: Working papers, legal analyses and journal articles.
3. Policy briefs
We turn evidence into short, practical recommendations that decision-makers can use, and we contribute to consultations on AI governance.
Outputs: Policy briefs, consultation submissions and roundtable summaries.
4. Capacity building and mentorship
We train and mentor early-career researchers, students and public servants, building a pipeline of African AI governance professionals with strong gender and regional balance.
Outputs: Mentorship cohorts, workshops and, later, fellowships.
